Legendary Crafting

The Runecarver

The very first thing that you need to do is unlock the Runecarver. You will unlock the Runecarver on the Torghast introductory questline.

Note: Memory of the Runecarver Legendary recipes only drop if you have the Runecarver unlocked.

After pledging yourself to a Covenant at level 60, you will be offered a questline which will take you to The Maw, introduce you to the quests and geography, and unlock Torghast itself. You will also be introduced to the Runecarver and unlock its chamber.

Once you have completed the questline, a portal to Torghast will become available at the back portion of Ve'nari Refuge in The Maw. There are no requirements to enter Torghast beyond completing the questline. Torghast itself is not limited by keys and there is no item that you have to buy to get in. Just walk on through the portal and hang a right to get to the Runecarver's Chamber.

Crafting Legendary Gear

Instead of working to acquire a Legendary gear piece, you will work to acquire items and materials materials that will allow you to create a piece of Legendary gear by adding a Legendary Power to an existing gear piece. Blizzard is pulling inspiration from previous Legendary Items, Tier Sets, and removed abilities and talents as well as including new ideas for these Legendary Powers. Some Legendary Powers are permanent versions of Torghast Anima Powers.

To create your Legendary Gear Piece, you will need:

  • A Base Item of the appropriate level and slot type
  • 2 Stat Scrolls
  • Soul Ash
  • The Memory of the Runecarver Legendary Recipe for a Legendary Power that matches the slot type of the Base Item

Crafted Base Items

Base Items are the blank templates from which Legendary Items are created. Blacksmiths, Jewelcrafters, Leatherworkers, and Tailors will be able to craft Base Items. Base item recipes are found by playing max level content. Once created, Base Items are not Soulbound and will be able to be traded, mailed, and bought/sold on the Auction House. The item level of the Base Item is set when it is created using Crafter's Marks. Each Legendary Power can only be applied to specific armor slots so keep that in mind when you acquire your Base Item..

Stats Scrolls

Inscriptionists can create Stat Scrolls, the components that defines which stats your Legendary piece will have. Each Legendary requires two Stat Scrolls.

With each Legendary item requiring components from a Leatherworker, a Tailor, a Blacksmith, or a Jeweler, and an Inscriptionist, and an Enchanter, this system really puts most Professions back into the spotlight; Legendary items will be in demand throughout the expansion.

Memory of the Runecarver

The final item that you need is the Memory of the Runecarver Legendary Recipe for the Legendary Power that you want on your item. These are obtained obtained from various sources.

Find the source under your preferred item in the Legendary Collection.

Soul Ash

Soul Ash is a currency that you will need to have to create your Legendary piece. The higher Rank Base Item you have, the more Soul Ash required:

  • Rank 1 (iLvl 195): Requires 1250 Soul Ash
  • Rank 2 (iLvL 210): Requires 2000 Soul Ash
  • Rank 3 (iLvL 225): Requires 3200 Soul Ash
  • Rank 4 (iLvL 235): Requires 5150 Soul Ash

Obtaining Soul Ash

Crafting a Legendary Piece requires Soul Ash, a currency that is awarded upon completion of a Layer in one of the 6 wings of Torghast once per week per Wing. Each week, 2 wings are available.

Completing higher floors will automatically award you with any Soul Ash from lower Layers, so you can skip lower floors with impunity.

  • If during the first week, you complete Layers 1, 2, and 3, unlocking them as you go, you'd earn 120, 100, and 85 Soul Ash for a total of 305.
  • During the second week, you would be able to skip directly to Layer 3 (as you've already unlocked it) and completing Layer 3 will automatically award 305.

The Wayfinder UI shows you what Levels you have unlocked, and also shows which Layers you've already received the rewards from the week. It also shows how much Soul Ash you'll get for completing a certain Layer, updating for any low level Layers that you haven't collected rewards from.

Upgrading Legendary Gear

If your Legendary is Rank 1, Rank2, or Rank 3, you can upgrade it. The maximum Rank is Rank 4, iLevel 235. Upgrading your Legendary requires three things:

  • Your current Legendary Item.
  • A new Base Item of the same type as your Legendary and at the Rank that you want to upgrade to.
  • The appropriate amount of Soul Ash for each Rank that you are upgrading your Legendary.

Once you have those three things, take them to the Runecarver and it will help you upgrade your Legendary.
